気候変動という巨大な現実を前にして、文学を読む者と書く者はどうすればいいのか。人間の活動が地層や気候に甚大な影響を与えはじめた時代は「人新世」と呼ばれ、その定義と含意について自然科学のみならず人文学においても議論が進んでいる（例えば、Dipesh Chakrabartyの一連の著述）。一方で、人新世の概念が喚起する、差異化されていない「人間」が「自然」に破滅的な作用を及ぼすというイメージは、帝国主義、家父長制、人種差別といった問題を埒外に置いてしまうのではないかという疑義も出されている。このトークでは、「世界＝生態」（world-ecology）のパラダイムを提示する環境史家Jason Mooreとその影響下で斬新な世界文学論を展開する文学研究者Michael Niblettを取り上げ、近代がどのように周縁の地域においてエコロジカルな危機をもたらすか、そしてそれをいかにして文学に読み込むことができるかを考えたい。同時に、作家のAmitav Ghoshの近年の思索を追い、小説において気候を主題化することの可能性と困難について考えたい。私のもくろみは、気候問題を他の近代の諸問題と連続したものとして捉え、文学を通じてそれら問題系を批判的に考える方法を模索することにある。
「気候変動を読むこと／書くこと」

What should readers and writers of literature do in the face of the enormous reality of climate change? The period when human activities began to have a profound impact on the earth and climate is called the “Anthropocene,” and its definition and implications have been debated not only in the natural sciences but also in the humanities (see, for example, Dipesh Chakrabarty’s recent writings). On the other hand, some have questioned the validity of the idea of the Anthropocene in which the supposedly undifferentiated “human race” exert a catastrophic effect on “nature.” In this scenario, issues such as imperialism, patriarchy, and racism are left out of bounds. In this talk, I take up environmental historian Jason Moore who proposes the paradigm called “world-ecology,” and literary scholar Michael Niblett who under Moore’s influence has developed a refreshing theory of world literature, considering how modernity has brought about ecological crises in marginal areas and how these crises can be read into literature. I will also discuss the recent speculations of the writer Amitav Ghosh and consider the possibilities and difficulties of thematizing climate in fiction. My overall intention is to view the climate issue as continuous with other modern problems and to seek ways to think critically about these problems through the lens of literature.
