Online Talk#32: Giving Voice to the Unrecorded: Remembering the Great Famine through Marita Conlon-McKenna’s Children’s Fiction

語り継がれない子どもたちの声——アイルランド大飢饉の記憶とマリタ・コンロン＝マッケンナの児童文学

本トークでは、19世紀半ばにアイルランドを襲った大飢饉における子どもたちの記憶を、マリタ・コンロン＝マッケンナの児童文学三部作『サンザシの木の下に』（1990）、『ワイルドフラワー・ガール』（1991）、『フィールズ・オブ・ホーム』（1996）を中心に考察する。飢饉という「環境的・社会的危機」を子どもの視点から描くこれらの作品は、記録されなかった弱者の経験を可視化し、物語を通じて歴史を「骨肉化」する試みといえる。また、教育現場での活用や舞台化を通じて再演されるこれらの物語は、個人の痛みを社会的記憶へと変換している点で、トラウマ研究が示す「反復」と「語り直し」の構造とも響き合うのではないだろうか。飢饉の記憶がどのように現代の倫理的・環境的課題と交差しうるか、そして文学がいかにして「語り得ぬもの」を次世代へ伝えていくのか、その考察の足がかりを提示したい。

This talk examines the remembrance of children in the Great Famine, focusing on Marita Conlon-McKenna’s ‘Children of the Famine Trilogy’—Under the Hawthorn Tree (1990), Wildflower Girl (1991), and Fields of Home (1996). Depicting the Famine as an ‘environmental and social crisis’ through the eyes of children, these works make visible the unrecorded experiences of the powerless and can be seen as an attempt to ‘give flesh’ to history through narrative. Moreover, through their use in education and stage adaptations, these stories transform individual pain into collective memory, resonating with the structures of repetition and re-narration suggested in trauma studies. This presentation seeks to offer a preliminary step toward considering how the memory of the Famine intersects with contemporary ethical and environmental issues, and how literature may transmit the ‘unutterable’ to future generations.
