Online Talk#5: “How to Be in This Crisis: Reexamining Gary Snyder’s Reinhabitation”

1969年、ほぼ12年にわたる京都滞在を終えたゲーリー・スナイダーは、家族とともにアメリカに帰国し、1970年秋にはカリフォルニア州ネヴァダ・シティーの森の中に建てた家で生活を始めた。キットキットディジー(Kitkidizzie)という名称を有するその家は、自らを場所（place）を生きる「再定住者」(reinhabitory)と呼んだ詩人にとって、1960年代あたりから顕著になった環境危機や「アメリカ」を題材とする詩や思想を創造する拠点となった。あれから50年、スナイダーは詩集Turtle Island（『亀の島』、1974）でピューリツァー賞を受賞、アメリカ現代詩を代表する詩人の一人として知られるようになった。1996年には40年かけて書かれたライフワーク『終わりなき山河』(Mountains and Rivers without End)が出版された。まずは、このような詩人の(再)評価を試みてみたい。後半は、スナイダーと同世代のウェンデル・ベリーなども紹介しながら、この世代が共有していることについて言及したい。また、スナイダーとの関連で、宮沢賢治の先駆性についても考えていることを話してみたい。このような流れで話すと、昨今の研究で取り上げられるようになった“planetarity”、 “place”、 “planet”等についても言及することになるだろう。

In 1969, finishing his years in Kyoto, Gary Snyder returned to the United States with his family and began living in the house that he built in 1970 in the woods in Nevada City, California. The house, which he named Kitkitdizze, became “a node in the net” where, Snyder as a “reinhabitory” person, wrote poetry and prose on his family, “America,” natural environment, cultural phenomena, and environmental crises. In 1975, Snyder won Pulitzer Prize for Turtle Island (1974) and since then has come to be known as one of the most iconic and influential contemporary American poets. Mountains and Rivers without End, which took him for forty years to complete, was published in 1996. This year, 2021, marks the fiftieth year since the construction of Kitkitidizze, and I would like to reexamine what the poet has accomplished in these years. In the second half of my talk, I will comment on a few poets such as Wendell Berry who share important environmental ideas with Snyder. In addition, in discussing Snyder’s Japan years I would like to comment briefly on Kenji Miyazawa as a poet that attracted/influenced him. Such a talk inevitably invites comments on the current literary and critical interest in “planetarity,” “place,” and “planet.” While reviewing Gary Snyder’s achievements, I hope to briefly discuss this topic as well.
